A Mooresville man wants answers after stepping on a sharp metal object that inexplicably turned up in his driveway this weekend.
Chuck Daymude says he had never seen anything like the metal spike that went through his flip-flop and a quarter inch into his foot. He got a tetanus shot as a precaution and learned from an internet search that the piece is called a caltrop or jackrock, a weapon that dates to ancient times and today can be used to deflate or destroy tires. Deploying them is generally against the law. Daymude called the object on his property somewhat of a personal attack, saying that when something is thrown into his yard that could harm him, his family or his dogs, he takes it seriously.
Last November, the Macon County Sheriff's Office in western North Carolina said it was investigating several tire-puncture devices found on roads.
