A Winston-Salem man has been sentenced to more than 24 years in prison for kidnapping a gas station clerk during a robbery, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.

DeAngelo Shamond Toomer, 41, of Winston-Salem, was sentenced to 293 months, or 24 years and 5 months, plus five years of post-release supervision on a kidnapping charge, and to 15 years plus three years of post-release supervision for possession of a firearm as a previously convicted felon. Court records say that around 12:28 a.m. on Jan. 8, 2025, Toomer entered the Speedway Gas Station on University Parkway with a gun, demanded money from the clerk's register and Newport cigarettes at gunpoint, then forced her to write a sign saying the store was closed for restocking before leading her to her car and telling her she was driving.

Customers who noticed the store empty called 911 for a wellness check, and officers used real-time tracking data from the clerk's vehicle to investigate the kidnapping.
